Hidden Citation Paths

Situations where AI models cite a secondary source or aggregator instead of the original creator – you produce the content, but credit and authority go elsewhere.

Hidden Citation Paths is one of the most underestimated challenges in GEO. Original research, statistics or definitions published on a domain can be picked up and redistributed by aggregators, news outlets or wikis – and when AI models generate responses, the aggregator is cited rather than the primary source because the aggregator has higher domain authority or broader distribution. In 3LA, cited_urls exists as a schema field in ProbeRunOut, but is only populated via manual import of Perplexity responses with source links, or by activating Perplexity Sonar via direct API key – other LLMs do not return source URLs at this date. To identify Hidden Citation Paths: use the Perplexity Sonar integration in Brand Analyzer, or paste AI responses manually and examine which URLs are actually cited when your topics are discussed.
