Answer-First Design

A content structure where each paragraph or section opens with the direct answer to the question posed by the heading - optimised for AI models that extract answers from the first sentences of a text block.

Answer-First Design is the practical implementation of journalism's inverted pyramid - adapted for AI citation logic. AI models generating a response to a user query scan content for the densest concentration of relevant information as early as possible in the text. A section that begins with context, background and introduction before reaching the point gives the model lower confidence than a section that answers directly in the first sentence. Pages structured with question-format headings («What is X?», «How does Y work?», «What does Z cost?») combined with answers in the first sentence are 45% more likely to be cited by AI systems than pages with declarative headings and introductory context. Answer-First Design is not only an L3 technique - it also improves L1 score because humans scanning content prefer the same structure. It is one of the few actions in 3LA where optimising for AI and optimising for humans point in exactly the same direction.
